The sky was filled with the bright hues of more than 100 butterflies at Royal North Shore Hospital in August, as children gathered for their first glimpse of the new " Well Garden".

The colourful tribute heralded the garden's official opening, which was a joint venture between Humpty Dumpty Foundation and Variety, the Children’s Charity.

Construction of the garden was the fulfillment of Fairy Sparkles' dream that sick children and their families should have somewhere to go within the hospital's grounds that offered a break from their treatment.

Humpty Dumpty Foundation Chairman, Paul Francis, said the garden was specifically designed for the previously tiled balcony area adjacent to the children's ward on level five at Royal North Shore.

"Previously it was basically a featureless, large balcony. The generosity and expert assistance of Ben Hargraves from Hargraves Landscapes and Craig Sinclair from Universal Rock, allowed us, in partnership with the Variety Club, to transform the garden into a beautiful oasis," Mr. Francis said.

"The garden is a tribute to the continued generosity of our supporters, who never say no when it comes to brightening the lives of sick children”.

"Fairy very firmly believes that sick children and their families will have a better chance of healing physically, spiritually and emotionally if they can have brief periods of respite from the daily grind of treatments they need to get well."

Mr Francis was joined by Jack Cannons AM, Chief Barker of the Variety Club NSW, Fairy Sparkles, Wallaby legend Phil Kearns and Jane Flemming.

Federal Minister Joe Hockey MP officially opened the garden, which was then handed over to delighted hospital staff and the children in the ward.

Humpty and Variety have already got the wheels in motion to create another Well Garden for the children at Mt Druitt Hospital.
