Humpty in hospital a comfort for Emma

When Lachie Cope was born 14 weeks prematurely at the Royal North Shore Hospital, his young parents Emma and Karl had never heard of the Humpty Dumpty Foundation.

But, during the next few days as they struggled to deal with a series of heartbreaking complication suffered by their tiny baby, the purple and yellow Humpty logo would become a familiar friend that helped bring a moment of relief at an extremely tough time.

Lachie passed away on March 14 2007 having survived only 11 days - all of which were spent in the newborn care centre at RNSH.

"He is in a much better place now," Emma said. "And he is still a major part of our family, he is always in our thoughts and we celebrate his short life at Christmas, on his birthday and on the anniversary of his death."

Through their experiences at the hospital, the Copes became Humpty Dumpty supporters and at Humpty's Annual Ball in 2007, revealed their anguish about losing Lachie, but Karl also delivered some good news when he excitedly announced that his wife was pregnant again.

"I had only found out the day before and was only five weeks pregnant. We hadn't told anybody and Karl told a room full of strangers," Emma said laughing.

"We knew it was risky but we wanted to give it one more shot." Emma spent two months on bed rest in Royal North Shore during her pregnancy.

She was sent home at 28 weeks when the baby was doing well. Six weeks and five days later, Emma gave birth prematurely to Madeline Grace on April 2.

Madeline was taken to the special care unit, and once more, Humpty surrounded the family. "You see those logos and they make you smile because you know what has gone on behind the scenes just to get them there," says Emma. Maddie is now happily home with her big brother and proud parents. "We do feel very lucky."
